Red Sox Should Claim Scott Downs

Blue Jays reliever Scott Downs, in whom the Red Sox have shown interest in the past, was placed on waivers by Toronto yesterday. Downs was a hot commodity at the trade deadline, but the Jays clearly weren’t wowed by any incoming offers for the lefty.

Now, the Sox have a chance to potentially acquire Downs on the cheap (or at least cheaper than he would have been a month ago). If you aren’t familiar with the Sox’ ineffective bullpen at this point, you’re brain is likely smaller than Johnny Damon’s. Downs is exactly what Boston needs…

Bobby Abreu On The Red Sox’ Radar?

August 26, 2010

By claiming fan favorite turned traitor Johnny Damon from the Tigers, the Red Sox proved their desperation for a capable bat in left field. Aside from Manny Ramirez, there might not be a human being on Earth that has a worse relationship with Red Sox’ management.

Not surprisingly, Damon turned down a return to Boston, and the Sox are stuck with several underwhelming options in left. Now, according to various sources, Bobby Abreu has been placed on waivers by the Angels. Might the Red Sox turn to another ex-Yankee for outfield help?

The Red Sox have announced that Daisuke Matsuzaka has a sore back and will not make is scheduled start against the Rays on Friday night, which opens a key 3-game series in Tampa Bay.

Jon Lester, who was scheduled to start game 2 of a doubleheader opposite Mariners’ ace Felix Hernandez tonight, will now start in Dice-K’s place on Friday. Tim Wakefield has been summoned from the bullpen to face Seattle in tonight’s series finale in which the Sox go for a sweep…

Josh Beckett Just Good Enough In 5-3 Win Over Mariners

Today’s start was an important one for Josh Beckett. He had been shelled by the Yankees, Rangers, and Angels in his previous 3 outings (giving up a combined 19 earned runs) and was facing easily the worst offense in baseball at a rainy and foggy Fenway Park.

Beckett entered the day with a 4-1 career record against Seattle with a sub-3 ERA. All the conditions were in place for him to finally experience success for the first time in more than 3 weeks. It wasn’t perfect, but the struggling righty gave the Red Sox enough to earn the victory in a must-win situation…

Fenway Faithful Report Red Sox Poll Of The Week

Posted by Alastair Ingram
August 24, 2010

Last week’s results: More than two thirds of our readers (69%) feel that Clay Buchholz deserves to win the 2010 AL Cy Young Award. David Price and C.C. Sabathia received a combined 22% of the vote, while Cliff Lee, Jon Lester, and Trevor Cahill got a total of 40 votes.

This week’s question comes in the aftermath of Johnny Damon’s decision to stay in Detroit instead of coming back to Boston. So, which member of the 2004 World Series Champion Boston Red Sox do you wish was still on the roster today? Vote now, or forever hold your peace…
