Jonathan Papelbon Provides Fitting End To Red Sox’ Playoff Hopes

September 27, 2010

Facing virtual elimination on Sunday night in New York, Jonathan Papelbon renewed a career high with his 8th blown save of the season and the Red Sox wasted a 2-run 9th inning off Yankee closer Mariano Rivera.

Papelbon’s consistent struggles (especially at Yankee Stadium) have helped to define this 2010 Red Sox season, and it was an apropriate way to put Boston one step away from mathematical irrelevance…

Could this be the start of something special? Probably not, but the Red Sox are on the brink of sweeping the Yankees in the Bronx.

Jon Lester lost a no-hitter with 1 out in the 6th inning on Saturday afternoon, and the Sox rolled to their 2nd straight win over the Yankees…

Red Sox To Honor Mike Lowell With “Thanks, Mike Night”

The Red Sox have designated October 2nd as “Thanks, Mike Night”. It will be a chance for Red Sox Nation to honor the contributions of Mike Lowell, who says he will retire from baseball after the season.

Lowell has played 13 years in the Major Leagues and was named the World Series MVP with the Sox in 2007. He’s had his ups, and most recently downs here in Boston, but this is a fitting way for Lowell to exit the game…

Jonathan Papelbon And Daniel Bard Set In Bullpen Roles

It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to deduce that young flamethrower Daniel Bard has been by far the most effective Red Sox reliever here in 2010.

But while Jonathan Papelbon is having easily his worst season as Boston’s closer, his job in that role remains secure. Bard won’t be the Sox’ closer any time soon…

Could David Wright Be Adrian Beltre’s Replacement In Boston?

Posted by Alastair Ingram
September 22, 2010

If (in my opinion, when) the Red Sox lose Adrian Beltre to free agency this winter, the club will have a gigantic hole to plug at 3rd base. Beltre has been easily the team’s most consistent hitter and has provided a more than capable glove at the hot corner.

To say there aren’t a ton of attractive 3rd basemen in the 2011 free agent pool would be a colossal understatement, and the Sox may be forced to explore a trade. New York Mets 3rd baseman David Wright is the most intriguing option…
